How to Cut Galvanized Pipe?

1. How to Cut Galvanized Pipe?

The zinc layer, as an anti-corrosion layer, can effectively block the intrusion of moisture and oxygen, thus greatly extending the service life of the steel pipe. Galvanized pipes are generally produced through hot-dip galvanizing or electro-galvanizing processes. After galvanizing treatment, the steel pipes can not only effectively prevent the pipes from rusting, but also have high mechanical strength and pressure resistance, and adapt to a variety of harsh environments.

Because this type of steel pipe is particularly strong and not easy to be damaged, it is very suitable for long-term use occasions, such as machinery manufacturing, steel construction projects, steel structure engineering, power engineering, power plants, agricultural and chemical machinery, etc. It is the first choice for many customers who have demands for both durability and reliability.

Because galvanized pipes look bright silver, they are relatively easy to identify. Even if the surface is accidentally scratched, the zinc layer will "sacrifice itself" and corrode earlier than the steel inside, thus continuing to protect the steel pipe from rust and extending the service life of the pipe.

2. How to Safely Cut Galvanized Pipe?

For the safe cutting of galvanized pipes, it is required to not only achieve accurate cutting but also ensure the safety of the operator. The key lies in clear steps and correct methods. The following is a brief introduction to the operation methods for everyone:

Marking and Positioning: First, use a pen to draw a circle around the pipe at the position to be cut. Try to draw it accurately and straightly so that the cut will not be crooked. If you are using a CNC cutting machine, this step can be omitted because the machine's automatic positioning is very accurate.

Securing the Pipe: Before cutting, it is necessary to firmly fix the pipe with a clamp. Otherwise, if the pipe rolls or slides during cutting, it will not only result in an uneven cut but also easily cause dangers.

Taking Protective Measures: Remember to wear safety goggles and gloves to prevent metal shavings or dust from splashing into the eyes or onto the hands.

3. Can a Laser Cutter Cut Galvanized Pipe?

Generally speaking, a laser cutter can cut galvanized steel sheets. Nowadays, laser technology is very advanced. Most materials, whether organic or inorganic, can be cut by it. Various metals commonly used in industry, regardless of their hardness, can basically be processed by laser.

However, when cutting galvanized sheets, attention should be paid to the use of auxiliary gas. The purity and pressure of the gas directly affect the quality of the cut edge. If oxygen is used for cutting, its purity should be at least 99.6% — the higher the purity, the smoother and more beautiful the cut surface, but the cost will also increase accordingly.

If nitrogen is used for cutting, its purity is recommended to be higher than 99.5%. High-purity nitrogen can prevent the cut edge of the galvanized sheet from discoloring during the processing.
